Act Now to Claim your Dot-Biz Domain
Santa Rosa, CA May 30, 2001, Domain
names, like beachfront real estate, have a limited supply. To meet
a large demand ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and
Numbers) has been trying to increase the number of top-level domains
(TLD). In addition to the commonly know dot-com, dot-net and dot-org,
seven more dot-somethings will be available. This summer the newly
approved domains dot-biz and dot-info become available for purchase.
Dot-biz will be a restricted TLD available only for commercial or
business purposes and .biz names are not intended for exclusively
personal or non-commercial purposes, according to the May 15, 2001
ICANN news announcement. Dot-info will be an unrestricted TLD, open
to any business or person to register for any purpose.
The dot-biz domains will be available to any business starting July
9, 2001, according to Network Solutions. However if you have a registered
trademark, and you would like to safeguard your intellectual property
by claiming the corresponding dot-biz TLD you may register (for
a fee) a Trademark Claim Form until early July. For example, if
you own the mark for Asphyxia Corp, you would probably want to claim
the asphyxia.biz domain, whether or not you have (or intend to have)
a website. Otherwise, once this domain is available on the open
market you will have no control over the type of website that is
placed at this address. Someone could place a pornographic site
where your potential customers would normally look for you. If you
claim then buy the domain and never use it, that security costs
you between $13-40 per year, depending on where you register your
domain name.
If you register your claim, then do not purchase the domain; you
will be notified if another business attempts to buy it. Under this
service, domain-name applicants will be notified of a trademark
owner's claim when they submit an application for a claimed name.
If the applicant decides to go ahead with the registration, the
business submitting the claim will be notified of the registration
and will be given a window of opportunity to challenge the registration
using an administrative dispute resolution procedure.
The timeline for awarding the dot-biz domains looks like this: late
May through early July businesses can submit trademark claim forms;
beginning in July through late September, domain applications will
be accepted from all businesses through registrars. These applications
will be randomly selected in batches and awarded. In October, .biz
names that have been awarded will become operational. A similar
process, beginning in June, will be used for awarding dot-info domains.
